Fish Florida: Mosquito Lagoon, Jupiter, And Flamingo

Light Tackle fishing charters in Mosquito Lagoon, Jupiter, and Flamingo for anglers of all abilities with Florida native Capt. Ryan McFarland.

While fly fishing is his primary focus, Capt. Ryan McFarland also spends a lot of time fishing with light tackle using artificial baits. The same areas that we fish with a fly rod, (Mosquito Lagoon, Jupiter, and Flamingo) can often be approached in a very similar way with spinning and plug gear for anglers who want to mix techniques throughout the day. Some situations are better suited for a fly rod, while others are better handled with artificial lures. Fishing conventional tackle opens up additional options throughout the day and can make certain situations more approachable, especially when conditions are less than ideal for fly fishing.

Capt. Ryan is not a fly purist, and excels at accommodating groups where not everyone fly fishes. It’s common for one angler to fish a fly rod while another uses spinning gear, allowing everyone to fish the way they want to and maximize the opportunities the day provides.

Light Tackle Fishing In Florida

Light tackle fishing with artificial lures closely mirrors how we approach fly fishing. Much of the fishing is still done visually while poling shallow water, working shorelines, and looking for fish before making a cast. Artificial baits allow for longer casts, more versatility in wind, and the ability to cover certain types of water more efficiently. In situations where a fly may be difficult to deliver or keep in the strike zone, conventional tackle can be a more effective option.

In Mosquito Lagoon, that can mean sight fishing redfish across the flats or working potholes and edges where fish are feeding. In Jupiter, it often involves fishing mangroves and structure or targeting fish along the beaches. In Flamingo, the same shoreline focused approach used with a fly rod translates directly to artificial lures.
